Navy Medicine in Vietnam: Oral Histories from Dien Bien Phu to the Fall of Saigon
Jan K. Herman

The book chronicles the Navy Medical Department's participation in Vietnam, beginning with the Navy's rescue of the French survivors of the Battle of Dien Bien Phu in 1954 and ending with the Navy's rescue of Vietnamese refugees fleeing the fall of South Vietnam in 1975.

When American involvement reached its peak in 1968, the 750-bed Naval Support Activity Hospital Danang (NSAH) was in full operation, and two hospital ships--the USS Repose and the USS Sanctuary--cruised offshore. Whether the situation called for saving the lives of injured sailors aboard a burning aircraft carrier or treating a critically wounded Marine for shock in the rubble-strewn streets of Hue, Navy medical personnel were in Vietnam from the beginning of American involvement to the very end, saving thousands of lives.

This book tells the story of the Navy Medical Department's involvement through stark and gripping first-person accounts by patients and the Navy physicians, dentists, nurses, and hospital corpsmen who treated them. More than 50 historic photos document their work.

Vietnam at War
By Mark Philip Bradley

For many Westerners, the Vietnam War summons images of American soldiers patrolling rice paddies, battling an elusive enemy as helicopters circle overhead. But there were, in fact, many Vietnam wars--an anti-colonial war with France, a cold war turned hot with the United States, a civil war between North and South Vietnam and among southern Vietnamese, a revolutionary war of ideas over the vision that should guide Vietnamese society into the postcolonial future, and a postwar war of memory. This book explores the complex ways in which the Vietnamese themselves have made sense of those conflicts.
Drawing upon the author's twenty years of research--much of it made possible by recently opened Vietnamese archives and other sources--Vietnam at War departs sharply from prevailing narratives in the West that have made the Vietnamese almost invisible in the making of their own history. Mark Philip Bradley not only probes the thought and actions of high policy makers in Hanoi and Saigon but also explores how northerners and southerners, men and women, soldiers and civilians, urban elites and rural peasants, and radicals and conservatives came to understand the thirty years of war that enfolded them and how they reckoned with its aftermath. He sets these experiences within a wider global context by examining the place of the United States, France, the Soviet Union, and China in Vietnamese histories of the war.
Today, as Vietnamese civil society becomes increasingly heterodox and the Vietnamese state seeks to develop a market economy while maintaining its commitment to socialism, the meanings of the conflicts that shaped so much of the country's recent history remain deeply contested. Vietnam at War is essential reading for anyone who seeks a clearer understanding of the paradoxes and tensions that underlie the Vietnam experience to this day.

Seals the Warrior Breed: Casualties of War (Seals, the Warrior Breed)
H. Jay Riker

The Snake in the Desert

The first generation of SEALs was forged in the steaming jungles of Vietnam, their deadly skills honed by combat. But jealousy brewing within the U.S. military bureaucracy threatened the future of the warrior elite, and shortsighted thinking forced them into pitched battles in Grenada and Panama that the SEALs shouldn't have fought and couldn't have won. Now the opportunity has finally come for redemption when the tanks of a ruthless Middle Eastern despot roll across the unprotected borders of a neighboring nation. Here, in a world of blood and oil, a new generation of SEALs is going in first to fight a new kind of war on its terms -- as Hunter–Killer teams of America's deadliest commandos plunge into a fast and murderous game of hide-seek-and-strike on Iraqi sands.

Vietnam: Anatomy of a Peace
Gabriel Kolko

In his penetrating analysis of the years following the Communist victory in Vietnam in 1975, Kolko asserts that although astonishingly effective as solders, the Communists have proved incapable of dealing with the enormous demands of reconstructing their war-torn nation. This book chronicles the devastating results behind the Communists' economic policies since 1986: a divided class society, corruption within the party ranks, a lack of education, and social services, and more.

The Vietnam War: A History in Documents (Pages from History)
Marilyn B. Young, John J. Fitzgerald, A. Tom Grunfeld

The Vietnam War tells the story of one of the most divisive episodes in modern American history through primary sources, ranging from government documents, news reports, speeches, popular songs to memoirs, writings by Vietnam veterans (including coauthor John Fitzgerald), and poetry by Vietnamese and Americans on matching themes. The book begins in the 19th century when Vietnam became a French colony, and traces the insidious route by which the United States became involved in a war on the other side of the world.

Stealth Patrol: The Making of a Vietnam Ranger, 1968-70
Bill Shanahan, John P. Brackin

Bill Shanahan was troubled by his line company duty in Vietnam: whenever his unit went on patrol, the North Vietnamese Army and Viet Cong could hear them coming. His unit didn't have a chance against an enemy that quietly emerged from the jungle like ghosts-and just as quickly disappeared. Shanahan wanted a better way to fight...and to stay alive. And so, just four months after he arrived in Vietnam in 1968, he joined the LRPs (Long Range Patrol). The mission of the Lurps, as they were called, was dangerous: Five- or six-man teams were dropped into the dense forest behind enemy lines. They were to observe enemy troop movements and stage ambushes that sometimes ended in fierce firefights. When their mission was over, they called for quick helicopter rescue. Back on base, they debriefed and tried to sleep off the adrenaline. Two days later they were back in the brush. The missions changed, but one goal was always the same-stay alive. In hard-hitting prose, Bill Shanahan, with co-author John Brackin, tells his story of survival behind enemy lines.

Point Man
Chief James Watson, Kevin Dockery

Chief Petty Officer James "Patches" Watson was there at the start. One of the first to come out of the famed Underwater Demolition Team 21, he was an initial member -- a "plank owner" -- of America's deadliest and most elite fighting force, the U.S. Navy SEALs.

Through three tours in the jungle hell of Vietnam, he walked the point -- staying alert to trip wires, booby traps and punji pits, guiding his squad of amphibious fighters on missions of rescue, reconnaissance and demolition -- confronting a war's unique terrors head-on, unprotected . . . and unafraid.
This is the story of a hero told from the heart and from the gut -- an authentic tour of duty with one of the most legendary commandoes of the Vietnam War.

Vietnam's Forgotten Army: Heroism and Betrayal in the ARVN
Andrew Wiest, Jim Webb

Vietnam’s Forgotten Army: Heroism and Betrayal in the ARVN chronicles the lives of Pham Van Dinh and Tran Ngoc Hue, two of the brightest young stars in the Army of the Republic of Vietnam (ARVN). Both men fought with valor in a war that seemed to have no end, exemplifying ARVN bravery and determination that is largely forgotten or ignored in the West. However, while Hue fought until he was captured by the North Vietnamese Army and then endured thirteen years of captivity, Dinh surrendered and defected to the enemy, for whom he served as a teacher in the reeducation of his former ARVN comrades.

An understanding of how two lives that were so similar diverged so dramatically provides a lens through which to understand the ARVN and South Vietnam’s complex relationship with Americas government and military. The lives of Dinh and Hue reflect the ARVNs battlefield successes, from the recapture of the Citadel in Hue City in the Tet Offensive of 1968, to Dinhs unheralded role in the seizure of Hamburger Hill a year later. However, their careers expose an ARVN that was over-politicized, tactically flawed, and dependent on American logistical and firepower support. Marginalized within an American war, ARVN faced a grim fate as U.S. forces began to exit the conflict. As the structure of the ARVN/U.S. alliance unraveled, Dinh and Hue were left alone to make the most difficult decisions of their lives.

Andrew Wiest weaves historical analysis with a compelling narrative, culled from extensive interviews with Dinh, Hue, and other key figures. Once both military superstars, Dinh is viewed by a traitor by many within the South Vietnamese community, while Hue, an expatriate living in northern Virginia, is seen as a hero who never let go of his ideals. Their experiences and legacies mirror that of the ARVNs rise and fall as well as the tragic history of South Vietnam.

A Profile of the PAVN Soldier in South Vietnam
RAND Corporation Research Memorandum

Konrad Kellen

The purpose of this study is to sketch a portrait of the rank-and-file North Vietnamese soldier in action in South Vietnam as an aid to strategic planning for psychological warfare. The study is based on the results of a series of interviews, conducted by RAND in 1965, with Northern soldiers who, prior to their capture or defection, were assigned to combat either with the regular People's Army of Vietman (PAVN) or with the National Liberation Front's Main Force, i.e., the Viet Cong (VC). of the 40 men interviewed for this study, 32 were captives and 8 were ralliers (defectors); 26 were privates, 12 were non-coms and 2 were officers.
